Hello Ive recently changes my tyres to 205/50zr17 93w. And now the steering is slightly heavy sometimes. Ive had my tracking, suspension arms, bushes all checked, all fine. They said it could be the steering rack but ive seen theres a steering issues with citeron cactus so i wanted to see if anyone else has had this issues before I replace the steering rack? Should I change all 4 tyres to 205/55 r16? Thanks

I had to change all four tyres to the same make and size. Beforehand, the car would pull to one side with one odd tyre. The same make and size of tyres have to be the same on both the front wheels and also a matching pair on the rear wheels. Citroen told me different matching tyres would cause an imbalance and how right they were.

Originally my Cactus came with Goodyears fitted which were very good, they lasted 25,000 on the front, the back never wore out by 35K.

I eventually had to change all the tyres so I chose some nice and cheap Chinese tyres at £50 each which are proving excellent in rain and all conditions. They are performing better than the Goodyears on cornering and braking. Their only disadvantage is I am not getting the mileage because of their softer compound, who cares, more affordable to replace.

Other readers on this site don't recommend fitting Chinese tyres and won't even give them the time of day even if they were free.

Confused.
How are you going to change from 17" to 16" without changing rims?
I totally agree different tyres on the same axle is not good. Different construction and loading rates do make a difference to the compliance ( how much the tyre squashes, deflect etc) and different roll resistance ( friction) and tyre compound all come to the party when the car is moving, even assuming the steering geometry and components are all in top condition. Also makes a good case for having the same tyre all round.
I will defend putting cheaper rubber on all 4 corners. New rubber with decent tread always beats old rubber with hardly any tread depth. Wouldn't be my choice but it's not my car.
