Alloy Corrosion

Post by paully » Fri Jun 22, 2018 11:03 am

Recently found about 3 areas of what looks like corrosion on one of my Cactus 17inch diamond alloys. The other 3 are fine.Took it back to the dealers yesterday , which ended up with 2 people inspecting it very closely. Seems one area they are putting down to kerbing it, although I did point out the tyres are fitted with the `alloy protectors` but then admitted that at least one area `could not be explained`.This I took as dealer speak for...`yes its corrosion but we cant say so as Citroen are unlikely to pay for it under warranty regardless`...Lots of photos taken and being sent onto Citroen`s warranties dept for their decision. I`m expecting a battle..

Anyone else had any recent similar experience ?

just to update, Citroen sat on this for a while and bounced it back to the dealer without saying if they would pay for it..I put my case to Citroen Customer services who again, after sitting on the fence for ages, finally came off it and agreed to pay for a new one..Result..Now on order with fitting due next week..So Happy Bunny time

The thread reference above is a different issue - see my attached picture. This is not kerbing, the mark is under the lacquer. I had one wheel replaced as I spotted this prior to my "final" service and this is another wheel. I have sent the pic to Warners Tewkesbury to get their view as clearly there is a fault here.

This was a big issue with the alloys on my previous DS3. Lots of people had wheels replaced for the exact same reason. Also the main reason I opted for the gloss black alloys on my cactus rather than the diamond cut version. In our country with the salt on the roads etc I think it's just about a given that this corrosion will occur. Most people will have either kerbed their wheels or just don't care.

Citroen definitely know all about it so I'd hold out for replacements under warranty.

Two wheels now impacted, one may be due to impact (not kerbing) but the other seems to be moisture getting through the lacquer. Citroen said they would pay half...(they did replace one as that had appeared prior to warranty expiry) but it is still a hefty bill for a cosmetic issue and it is well outside the warranty in regard miles and time. I will look at a referb as I am told that is low cost and the marks are slight (for now) so it may be an easy fix. Stich in time and all that.

I took the car to a specialist and parked up next to the Astons, Bentleys and McLarens and had a chat with the owner. He had no doubts that this is just what diamond cut alloys do. Stone impacts nick the lacquer and moisture can get in and then the results appear over time. Just wear and tear. He was surprised Citroen replaced a wheel previously. He was clear that I can get the wheels re-lacquered and he will give a 12 month warranty...but after that it will come back. Just one of those things if you put in the miles. Coloured alloys are an option as then the damage is less obvious. And he was a Cactus fan, he had them as courtesy cars.
