Squeak on bumpy roads

Post by Flairplayer » Sat Feb 23, 2019 5:16 pm

My Nov 2015 Cactus, 26500 miles, has developed a regular squeak on bumpy roads. It's dlifficult to identify the origin. It sounds like two bits of metal rubbing together rather than a dry joint.
Anyone have a similar noise? Any ideas what is the cause?

Mine did the same, but only at low speed.
I had the two front shock absorbers changed.
It was under warranty

That doesn't sound good. How much mileage had the car done?

Hmm... 35.000-40.000km. I think.

Tried every check I could think off. Nothing worked. Applied WD40 to the door hinges and the keeper brackets. The squeak seems to have gone. So far so good.

I have owned a Ford Focus which was notorious for squeaking sounds when going over bumps or uneven roads, at first thought it could be suspension or anything related but it turned out the rubber seals for the rear doors. Some talcum powder solved the issue.

Found it at last. The hinge on the offside of the rear seat back is loose. The nearside one is much firmer. Any suggestions on how to remove and/or repair?

Update.
There is a bent piece of metal forming the top of the hinge. It is secured in place by a 2 piece plastic plug. Pull up the centre bit and this unlocks so that the rest of the plug can be pulled out. The metal piece can be lifted off. The round hinge pin attached to the seat back is then visible. Under the pin there is a black plastic piece that has a couple of protruding lugs. These fit into two holes in the metal frame and the hinge pin rests in that plastic bit. The bottom of the metal top bit slots into a rectangular hole and then there are two curved pieces that fit into holes in the frame. Pull the top metal bit into place, put the two piece plastic plug back in the hole and lock into place by pushing in the lock pin.
Sounds complicated but it works. My problem was that the support bits had come loose and the hinge pin was rubbing on metal. I don't know if this developed slowly or is a result of faulty fitting.
