My Cactus refused to start from cold

Post by CactusBob » Thu Feb 22, 2018 7:34 pm

My Cactus refused to start from cold after work this evening. It took several tries before it finally did fire up. The first try, the starter cut out before the engine even turned over. It has been slightly rough when starting from cold for a while, (but only for a split second,) but always starts 1st turn of the key. I wonder if it's a problem with the spark plugs. Oil and water levels all fine, I check them regularly. Once it's started it runs fine, pulls like a train, goes as well as it always has with no problems. It's the 1.2 petrol with manual gearbox. It's due for it's second annual service next month, but I'll ring the dealer so they can find out what's wrong ASAP. Anyone else heard of this?

From your description, I can’t see it being the spark plugs.

No, I guess not. It's a mystery to me. Just hoping it starts in the morning so I can get to work.

Cold and difficult to start.
Look at the simple things first.
Is the battery still good. If you have a friendly garage nearby, see if they could check the voltage and amperage of you battery. It's not unknown for them to fall over in less than 2 years.
And the charging voltage from the alternator while they are a it.

I don't think it's the battery . It would be good if it was as it's a simple fix. It started fine first thing this morning. Later after work it did start first time but it was a bit hesitant to actually fire up. I've booked it into the dealers for them to see what they can find. I think it may just be a loose electrical connection somewhere. It's very strange as it runs like a dream otherwise.

I've got a 6 month old 1.2 Eat6 cactus that's just started doing the same. What I would say is when it actually does fire up the engine shakes with violence like it's misfiring and being a 3 cylinder engine that's especially not good

Unfortunately Cactus Bob left the forum after announcing in July '18 that he had traded it in for a Suzuki, and without ever explaining what the issue was with his starting problem , so we'll never know...

Some people have had problems with plugs.

Yours sounds like one cylinder out.

There may even be a Technical service Bulletin about it.
