ETG tip

Post by Aston » Fri Mar 31, 2017 8:50 am

Not sure if this is needed to be mentioned, but the ETG can be a bit jerky changing gears.
You can get around this by taking your foot off the accelerator, paddle up and then back on to the accelerator. It is somewhat smoother.

The ETG gearbox is dreadful. You know it's bad when you have to adjust your driving style to accommodate it.

Quoting fixerman:

ETG Reset

Get the engine warm.
Find a flat, safe straight piece of road & stop.
Make sure the selector is in D.
Floor the accelerator fully - past the kick down stop & keep it there until it hits 3rd gear and then drive normally.

Initially found our ETG to be jerky at low speed to the point that the Stop Start would stop working and require restarting via ignition, having read the above I follow this procedure occasionally whenever road / traffic circumstances permit. Since starting to do this the gearbox works like a dream even in very slow traffic and have not had any Stop Start issues.

I get on fine with the ETG box. I know I'm in the minority but I can't be the only one. Maybe my driving style suits it or something.

It's jerky changing up. Down gear isn't as bad.

I've had mine for two years now and it changes silky smooth. I've actually had comments by people that they don't feel it change gear. It is jerky when reversing up a steep incline and can also be a bit jerky if it changes down rapidly say behind a very slow lorry on a steep hill. Other than that I cannot fault it.

As mentioned it may be driving style, I'm no road burner.

Thanks for that Keith. Glad I'm not the only one. I would add that the paddle shift works brilliantly too.

You're right I forgot to mention that. Plus I find the kick down great also.

I think people misunderstand the ETG and so treat it like an old fashioned automatic with an old fashioned foot down kick down. Sure, you can drive it in that manner but it doesn't produce the best results. It's the same with Hybrid CVTs, they can be driving like an old fashioned auto but they respond far better to some sympathetic treatment.
