Is it worth buying it ?

Post by BananasSplitter » Sun Feb 25, 2018 8:34 am

Hey everybody !

Long time since my last visit :)
I had a Greyshark cactus for 8 months but as my style of life changed a lot I had to switch car again...

But now, more than a year later, I feel like buying a Cactus again :). I mean, I really miss this car and its relaxing drive style (compared to my swift sport). Although the seating is lot more comfortable and I won’t speak about the space in the car.

So my question is: is it worth buying a 85k km cactus ?
I’ve seen a really good-looking one, full options (or almost). It’s a 1.6 e-HDI from 2014 with ETG6 gear. Visually the car is really good and I’ll test-drive it next week for the mechanic part.

But what’s your opinion ? Is the amount of km too big to buy it or is it totally ok ?
I plan to keep this car at least 3 years with 25-30k km by year - will the motor survive so much km ?

Thanks for your answers and I really hope that I’ll drive a Cactus again very soon :)

So long as it has a full history (oil change every 25,000km) then that should be fine, keep on top of it and listen out for a ‘whining’ noise at about 70km which would indicate the input shaft bearing needs replacing on the ETG gearbox

Thanks for your answer :)

I’ll listen carefully.

Another point is that the car is covered by a one year (or 25000km) warranty so if anything’s going wrong due to its previous owner it should be fine. But if I can get rid off those problems... :)

Finally, the one I've seen is already sold. But gladly, I found another one, same price, 60k and exact same options (except leather seats which I don't really care). I'm going to try this one at the end of the afternoon, can't wait to drive a Cactus again :) !

I went to test the Cactus yesterday and everything was perfect - except two problems I had.
The car is very good looking (no trace of bad usage outside or inside). Both 25k and 50k maintenances have been made.

First problem I had was when the seller took the car outside the parking (the entry is very small so the seller prefered to do this himself). He started the engine and less than a minute later stopped the engine to give me the driver seat. When I tried to start the engine, it looked like the battery died - the engine couldn't start. The seller took the wheel and tried 2-3 times and finally could start the engine, after putting it on Drive mode and back to Neutral mode.
My opinion (and his) was that the battery didn't enjoy to be stopped after only 1 minute - as the car didn't moved in the last month and the outside temp was -12°C.

After that I could finally drive the car and everything went well - no weird noise, no gear problem. Only other problem was with the touchscreen; I couldn't change page. I was stuck under car's information (everything was fine on that screen, could change trip selection, ...). But I couldn't manage to go to Climatisation, Music, Nav or any other pages.

The seller said it was probably due to the battery again.

So what's your opinion about those two problems ? Is it really linked to the battery or is it another problem ? May I be worried about this ?

If everything goes well, I'll own the car next week and the seller will do a full check before.

Sounds like a good deal. My old C4 Grand Picasso had 270k miles on the clock when I traded it in for my Cactus and the engine was still running as good as new. As for the electrical glitches they do appear to be extreme cold and lack of use related. Good luck with your purchase.
