Bike carrier

Post by JesperV » Sun Mar 01, 2015 5:46 pm

Does anybody know any bikecarriers for mounting on the tailgate?
For 1, 2 or 3 Mountain bikes.

Citroen have one on their website. It's tow bar mounted.
£ 123.56*

Also Thule do various door mounted ones but I don't think they are Cactus specific.

Thanks, but I don't want a towbar or a roof solution.

Sorry if this is not what you mean.

Yes - that is the kind I have on my mind.
But which model - if any - fits on a Cactus?

The Thule Raceway 991 looks so well designed and I set my mind on getting one - but just received this response to my enquiry from Thule:

Thank you for your email and your interest in Thule Products.
We're sorry to tell you that it will be impossible to mount a Raceway onto a C4 Cactus, as it's hatch is equipped with a plastic spoiler, non supporting a hatch mounted carrier.

Anybody using a 2-bike carrier they can recommend for the Cactus?

Did anyone find a solution to carrying a bike rear mounted but not with a towbar?
I found one called Venezia, but suppliers now say that they think it won't fit.
If anyone has found one that definitely works I would appreciate some info. Thank you.

Did you ever get an answer to this? Wondering the exact same myself. Pricing up roof bars and then bike mounts Vs getting a hitch installed and getting a hitch carrrier. Both looking expensive...

I would have thought a tailgate bike mount for a Cactus would be tricky. In my experience the rack would need some form of attachment to the top of the tailgate. The Cactus has a plastic third brake light mount which would be the natural place to put the upper mounting. I am certain this couldn't withstand the weight of a bike.

I've got a Thule one from Halfords I had for my old Toyota Avensis hatchback.

All I can advise for certain is that the boot top aerofoil/spoiler on the Cactus is the problem bit. It sticks out and as the tightening straps pass up and over it will damage it or possibly even break it off. My only though about it some time ago was to relocate the position of the strap guides up the shaft of the rack so that they pass over the spoiler rather than around it. I never bothered to do it though.

I've seen tow hook mounted ones on other cars but it seems to be a highly expensive way to do it.

Isn't there a make of car that comes with one that sort of pivots out from underneath and locks into place? Sure I saw it on TV once some years ago. That's progress!
