Diesel auto mpg

Post by Twampy » Mon Feb 10, 2020 8:05 pm

Hi all, who's got a diesel automatic?
I'm getting 55mpg around town and just managing 60mpg on my 20 mile commute.
Im driving really carefully so was expecting more.
Thoughts please.

Our two diesel C3s could only manage low 60s and our C4 Picasso does low 50s. All are (were) manuals. Although auto gearboxes are much more efficient than there were, there is still a small fuel penalty. Is the figure quoted from fill-ups, or is it the computer figure? If the computer figure they are usually a little optimistic.

It's the computer estimates. I had a C3 Picasso which was getting about the same. I was hoping for a little better as this car is slightly lower emissions. My partners Ds3 is the same engine and I can get high 60's. I'm still happy but I thought modern autos might be more efficient.

Just thought. Is the car auto or ETG?

Shouldn't be a fuel penalty then. In my experience, the computer results are inconsistent. On one trip I did I recorded computer mileage against a fill-up calculation. One one occasion, when the computer said that the two tanks had given the same mpg, the fill-ups were at least 4mpg different. Our blue C3 always gives figures 10% higher on the computer.

I have the etg Diesel and get 47mpg consistently. (5.0l per 100km) I only once got more than 1000km from the tank which seems to be about 48l capacity.
Although i drive very carefully i put it down to the fact it has the 17" wheels and the fuel quality in Australia is somewhat poor. I get the best efficiency at about 60kph in 5th

I've just bought a cactus diesel (although it is a manual) and am finding mpg to be high 50s over mixed driving, even with me trying really hard to be economical. Tyre pressures are optimal I shift up as soon as possible and scarcely exceed 60mph. I bought it with 85k on the clock, so wondered if there was a problem, as the claimed 80+mpg is a fiction, but Im starting to suspect it's normal.
