Grinding disc brakes

There should be a one in a million chance of this happening to you but for what it's worth here's my experience. The other night I started to hear a grinding noise from the front offside (right in UK). It seemed rotational and changed pitch with the speed of the car. Wheel bearings, disc? after a while I came down in favour of the brakes. Took car to Citroen today who after a test drive and inspection have sorted it.

It turns out the brakes have a metal/foil label on them when new (never thought to ask where) and can in time come off. In my case it managed to get trapped in the brake... what are the chances? Simple case of removing it.

How interesting, I checked my discs all round a couple of days ago, no rust whatsoever as posted elsewhere. But I found them all to be quite scored although I've never experienced any grinding noise. I've only covered 6500 miles, not a heavy braker but was beginning to think that Citroen brake discs are made of cheese!!.

Okay so the forum won't let me upload photos tonight. But the pads were GONE!!
Inner pad was gone. Outer pad barely touched.

28,000km. We've got Skoda's at work that runs 130,000km on the same set.
Garbage!!

On the good side - super easy to change brake pads. Garage has 50 min to change. I'd say I wasn't far behind.

Another bad side - Check for rust. Rear axle already worn through rust coating and had started to rust. Added some extra undercoat tonight while I had the car on the lift.

Will have my car go through an extra coating this summer.

Those are left and right pads. Outer pads great condition. Calipers moved freely. Put some grease on where the pads slide just in case. Asked Citroen buy they had no explanation and appeared baffled. It had happened pads separated on the C4 Picasso he said, but they'd never heard about it on Cactus.

I used a other brand of pads now. Will keep an eye on them.

When I brought my Cactus for the first inspection, I did ask what was included. They didnt mention brakes, so I asked. Nope, was the answer. Brake pads are not cleaned and lubricated. So no wonder your brakes get ****. I clean, file rust off and lubricate my breaks when I change from summer to winter tires and vice versa. Now at just under 80K km, my front discs are worn down to the point that I will change them very soon. I bought TRW discs and pads for no money. I do oilchanges myself as well with a 15K km interval. 25K km is too much for a diesel like this. My oil is way dirty enough at 15. I can feel the rough charred dirt in the bottom of my oil drain pan. I will change to the third party oil sump from Klokkerholm at next oil change. It has larger capacity, and it has a huge flush drain plug as opposed to the standard 10 mm plug which is in a raised lump, leaving a fair amount of oil that cant be drained out.

For a long time, there has been a discussion here in Denmark whether or not the PSA/Ford 1.6 liter HDi/TDCI engine has a poorly designed oil pan. The claim from various consumer organizations including consumer programs on television is that the design makes oil sludge collect in the bottom of the oil pan and that it does not drain properly when emptying the oil pan. As a result, oil sludge is slowly mixed with new oil and this again ruins the turbocharger. The article is in Danish, but can be read in English via Google Translate. The company Klokkerholm as referred to in a few posts in the discussion offers a modified oil pan that allows the mentioned oil sludge to be completely emptied from the engine.

This sounds like swedish, but its a German company supplying them. I buy tires from them as well. It can take a while for everything to come, but so far I have been pleased with what I get and the prices I pay.

Just had Front Disc & Pads replaced On my 2014 Black flair 110, 41202 miles MOT & Service ÂŁ290 Independent Garage. Rear Disc's ok.
Well you can buy a set of discs and pads for ÂŁ45.92 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brakes-Set-Front-Discs-Pads-266-Ventilated-Axle-Kit/152708030229
So that's a bl00dy fortune for an hours work
My BlueHDI now on 37000 miles, flew through MOT and I reckon the brakes will be OK for another 20000 miles+, I've only done 9000miles myself and the car has been to the Alpes, twice.... Previous owner must have been gentle with the brake pedal

Please look at the pics of my rear discs and pad wear. Are they saveable?

The car has only covered 25,000 miles and these brakes didn't work properly.

I ask if anyone, a Citroen mechanic thinks they should have been covered under
warrantee for seized callipers?

I have forked out for replacements, should have cost ÂŁ370 but got a slight reduction.

To me those parts don't look so bad - if I was dealing with the issue on my own car I would have un-seized the calipers, re-assembled the old discs/ pads etc and then checked how they looked after a week or so of use. Then make a decision on the need for parts replacement...

As a diy task it would be cheaper overall, but would take me much more time than a mechanic in a garage...
